Why Fiuggi?

The Spa

Fiuggi is better known for its famous spa. From centuries only Fiuggi, where the natural springs of "Bonifacio VIII" and "Fonte Anticolana" can you find this particular mineral water. It has healing and diuretic properties which can prevent and dissolve kidney stones as well as any urinary tract infections including the prevention and post-surgical treatment. It also constitutes an efficient remedy for skin infections due to it's mineral properties.

Fiuggi's water is bottled and distributed all over Italy, however, the best way to take advantage of the water is to visit the spa itself. The water itself belongs to a special group of mineral waters of which characteristics are determined from its special filtration process through the tuff in the Fiuggi valley. Extremely useful for detoxing and treatment of digestive, renal and urinary tract infections. 

Fiuggi's waters were known since Roman times as "Fons Arilla". In fact, in the area where the springs are located, a number of ruins and relics from Roman Empire. In the medieval times, the springs were brought to fame by the regular attendance of Pope Boniface VIII, to cure his kidney stones.

Food and Wine

Food lovers can rest easy: Fiuggi is not only famous for its water, but is filled with local restaurants catering   to specialities of the area. The traditional menus are simple. Cheeses include various types of "caciotta" and sheep milk ricotta. 

Hand made pasta includes two local specialities: "gnochetti" - small gnocchi type pasta and "fini fini", very thin egg tagliolini. A "ragu' Ciociaro" sauce made from chicken and tomato or porcini mushrooms from the Ernici mountains accompany these dishes

A distinguished and excellent charcuterie composed of mountain prosciutto, which is the norm on any dinner table in Fiuggi, along with pork chops served with hot polenta covered in pecorino and the classic "abbacchio" (lamb chops) cooked in a hundred different ways.

Traditional desserts are not as elaborate but nevertheless tasty. Amaretti di Fiuggi and of Guarcino, homemade round cakes (ciambelle) sprinkled with sugar. 

The most important wine of the Ciociaria is the Cesanese del Piglio, rigorously classified as a D.O.C. 

(Denominazione di Origine Controllata) wine. 

Cesanese del Piglio is produced in the communal territories of Piglio, Serrone, Acuto, Anagni and Paliano and is made from Cesanese di Affile and/or Cesanese Comune grapes. 

A few other wines that definitely deserve a taste is the Bianco Passerina del Frusinante, a white wine recently put on the Inidcazione Geografica Tipica list, which are wines that are particular to a region. 

Others include Torre Ercolana di Anagni, Merlot of Sant Elia Fiumerapido and Cabernet of Atina. 

 

Nightlife

Fiuggi has many bars, pubs and restaurants including cafe's with live music on some nights. Live concerts, festivals, theatre shows and opera are frequent during the summer season.
